Volkswagen AG (ADR) (OTCMKTS:VLKAY) establishes its reputation

Volkswagen AG (ADR)(OTCMKTS:VLKAY) has established a reputation for quirky yet reliable vehicles and is the manufacturer behind such cultural icons as the VW Beetle. The company is looking to continue this trend and on Friday a two-seater hybrid car, designated the XL1, was unveiled in Chattanooga, TN. Just last year the vehicle was a concept unit but has now been officially earmarked for production and it boasts an impressive list of technical specifications.

Powered by a plug-in hybrid drive system featuring a two cylinder engine, a 27 HP electric motor, a lithium ion battery and a seven speed automatic transmission, the XL1 can cover over 200 miles on a single gallon of diesel fuel and the auto manufacturer confidently states that this is the most fuel efficient car in the world. The new model is also remarkable lightweight weighing approximately 1,750 pounds which would make it around 1,000 pounds less than the VW Golf which is already one of the smallest cars on the market. The cars design is also geared towards a low center of gravity which boosts its aerodynamics and in turn helping to increase fuel efficiency.

There is also a very unique feature on the XL1; it does not have the traditional side rearview mirrors on the outside which contributes to drag on a motor vehicle. Instead the car uses interior camera monitors and Volkswagen AG (ADR)(OTCMKTS:VLKAY) is the only automaker with a street license for this groundbreaking innovation.

The new car will be manufacture in a German plant and will be available for sale in Europe next year. As yet there is no schedule for a release in the United States, neither has a price been revealed for the unit. However, given the reputation that Volkswagen AG (ADR)(OTCMKTS:VLKAY) has for affordability, it is very likely that the cars will be in the mid to low range of the price spectrum.
